*Description*: These images of the Arches cluster, taken by three different telescopes, reveal progressively more detail in the tightly packed collection of about 2,000 stars. The Arches is the densest star cluster in our Milky Way Galaxy and resides in our galaxy's crowded core. Astronomers used the image at right, taken with Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer, to determine if stars in the cluster have a weight limit at birth. Hubble's infrared camera is well suited to...

Clouds of dust billow out of southwestern Sudan to blanket parts of the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is just part of a large dust storm that stretched across much of Central Africa on April 4, 2005, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( modis.gsfc.nasa.gov MODIS ) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov/ Terra satellite captured this image. This storm seems to be originating at several points in the upper right corner of the image, and the dust is...

In the eastern United States, weather conditions have been conspiring with human activities to generate hazy skies across a broad area. Haze, or particle pollution, has been lingering in the skies over the Mississippi River Valley, the Deep South, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Southeast off and on since June 20, 2005. The air over the region has frequently been stable and humid -- atmospheric conditions that keep the tiny aerosol particles produced by our vehicles, power plants, and fires hovering...

Part 2 of the first Technolotics Vidcast. Also part 2 of episode 16 of the technolotics audio podcast. Technolotics is an irreverent look at technology, politics and the media; from a ragtag bunch of Irish students. We're a humorous show which discusses the latest technology and political developments reported online and in the mainstream media, endeavouring to frame them in greater depth (and with less effort at political 'neutrality') than other podcasts.

Areas where MODIS detected active fires are outlined in red. Burned areas associated with the fires appear dark, purplish brown compared to the surrounding tan landscape. Remaining natural vegetation, including a ring of wetland vegetation...

Tropical Storm Sanvu blew ashore over southeastern China on August 13, 2005. Though the storm had not reached typhoon status, for which it would need winds of 119 kilometers per hour or 74 miles per hour, it still had the characteristic cyclone shape of such a storm. Sanvu swirls around a slightly darker center, which was about to make landfall when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( modis.gsfc.nasa.gov MODIS ) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov/ Terra satellite captured this image at...
